LOS ANGELES, CALIF. By J. M. Price
How time does go on. The "Mag" is waiting for the monthly letter and it seems like I only wrote last week. Today was meeting day and all the regulars were in their seats. Election of officers resulted as follows: Ralph Brown, President; Paul Andrews, Vice President; Cree Daly, Financial Secretary; Bert Anderson, Corresponding Secretary; Russ Bates, Inspector and Guard. Here is a bunch of young officers who with the help of the members that do attend meetings, will make a successful local. As this will be my last letter to the Flint, I will not make it very long. Labor did itself proud on Labor Day as they had a wonderful parade. Of course, as usual, Local Union No. 141 was there about 25 strong out of a membership of about 90. Wait until the excuses are handed in to keep from paying that one dollar fine. Factory reports show the Crystalite in Glendale blow shops doing fine and the press shops expecting to have good times soon. The Technical on 48th Street, press shops have been working good, punch and stem expect to go to work next week after beign off for about five weeks. The Glass Containers, where our members are mould makers, are working good. By the way, Mr. Watts, don't you think those trucks of yours look a little seedy with that Long Beach sign on them? Quite a contrast to the rest of your plant. Maywood Glass Co. has been down for some time, but expect to resume work next week. Latchford Factory is operating full with about 20 mould makers working. The McLaughlin Plant has been closed for some time and I cannot say when it will resume work. The Forger Glass Co. has been closed for some time, but expects to resume operations in a few weeks. Lyn-Wood Mould Shop is working good, having added a couple more men. Who's who and where they are, Ray Chillicoat is working for Brother Brown at the Crystalite Mould Shop. In the blow room, Joe Bloomgreen, Fred Sig and Oscar Glassen and Fred Goodnow is gathering for a presser. I don't know his name as he never comes to meetings. At the Technical the same old crowd, no new faces. Charles Wilson, Marty Conroy and Toger Anderson pull the levers with C. Zimmerman, Nels Conradson and Tom (better known as Happy) O'Connell swinging on the punty. Gus Conradson, Franzen, Joe Sweeney, Jim Shulick, Chappie Humphrey work on punch and stem. The other factories employ all mould makers and so do few of them get to the meeting that I cannot give you much dope on them. So, that's that. Some of the younger members should be ashamed if they kick on paying that Labor Day fine after seeing a man like Jim McGee close to 74 years of age, tramp to the finish with the members. No doubt my successor will be able to keep you informed better than I have. I have tried to entertain and keep you informed, and if I have said or done anything to hurt anyone, I am sorry for I am glad of it. |
