LOS ANGELES, CALIF. By J. M. Price.
Once more it is time to let the rest of the trade know how we are in this part of the country. As far as our working conditions are concerned, I guess they are as good as anywhere, although, like everywhere else, we could have some improvement. We had a fine turnout at our last regular meeting. Some were present who have not been in the meeting hall for a long time. Come again, brothers, you might get interested. We had a couple of members from the Ladies' Garment Workers' Union asking our members to demand the union label on all goods they buy. If the members of unions would insist on buying union made goods it would do as much good as all the picketing we could do. It is your money you spend and they have not found a way to prevent you from asking for the union label, so buy union made goods. At the Crystalite they have put on two shops making insulators. At the Technical things are good. In the Mould Making Department our members are doing good. By the time you are reading this our convention will be on and our representatives will soon be meeting the manufacturers. There are a lot of good propositions in Circular No. 270, and maybe if we were a little more insistent we might receive some of the benefits of these proposals. Just a little news of where they have been and why they went. Fred Goodnow has just returned after a search through several stated on a prospecting trip. You know the boys of Local Union No. 49 found a lot of gold, and Fred still thinks "Thar is gold in them thar hills." The fishermen have not been making any reports, but I guess they have been having good luck. Blacky Underwood just returned from a trip to New Mexico and said he had a fine trip. Nick Shields, who has been with us for some time, has returned to the eastern wilds. Come again, Nick. Tony Fredricks, who has been with us for a long time, is thinking of heading back to the eastern shore. Good luck, Tony. Cree Daley reports his wife is home from the hospital and is getting along as well as could be expected. We all join in wishing her an early recovery. Russell Bates informed us that his father, Wilky Bates, is feeling much better. Have not been able to get around much for a while on account of crutches, but I expect to get away from them this week. The organization here in Los Angeles is meeting with success. The spot the M. and M. and the C. of C. thought never could be organized. They surely have had their eyes opened and are putting up the fight of their lives. But at present it is a losing fight, for the workers realize, with the protection they now have, they should get together and are doing a good job of it. So, when you are buying you can do a lot of good by asking for the union card. You can be served by union people in most anything you want to buy, and it is your job to help this way. You would not think of working alongside a man who does not have a card, so don't buy from a man who does not have a card. They are here and waiting to serve you. Come around, brothers, and give me some news and I will put your name in the best magazine there is. |
