Winkle, Zimmerman To Get Honorary Degrees
The University of Toledo will award three honorary doctor of laws degrees at commencement ceremonies for the 81st academic year to be held Thursday, June 4, at 7:30 p.m. in the TU field house. Named to receive the honorary degrees are Harry R. Winkle, vice chairman of the Owens-Corning Fiberglas Corp.; Otto Wittmann, director of the Toledo Museum of Art; and W. Paul Zimmerman, civic leader and former executive vice president of the Owens-Corning Fiberglas Corp. When the firm merged with Owens-Illinois Glass Co., he joined that firm. In 1938, he became comptroller, assistant treasurer, and assistant secretary of the newly formed Owens-Corning Fiberglas Corp. In 1958 he was named financial vice president, and in 1962 he was named executive vice president and was elected to the board of directors. In 1963 he was named vice chairman. Zimmerman is a graduate of Miami University and a trustee of that school. Following World War I, in which he served as an infantry officer, he joined the Hemingray Glass Co. as secretary, and later as general manager. When Owens-Illinois Glass purchased the company he was named plant manager and shortly thereafter, he became manager of O-I's industrial and structural materials division. In 1938, when the division was merged to form Owens-Corning Fiberglas Corp., Zimmerman became a vice president of the company. He later was named director and executive vice president, the office he held until his retirement. More than 770 persons will receive degrees at the ceremonies, including 184 ho completed their degree requirements in January. |
