- A woman and seven small children were sent back to New York as paupers by the State of Massachusetts Tuesday night. The woman's husband was in the navy on the Coast of Africa. Her pitiful plight attracted the attention of several passengers, and Edward W. Battles, agent of the Bay State Glass Company, and William C. Ford, both of Boston, made the fact known to the saloon passengers, and started a subscription in her behalf which reached over $60, although the subscription was not started till late.
