A $25,000 FIRE.

Baxter & Co.'s Cambridge Lumber

Yard Badly Damaged.

Two alarms were sounded just before 10 A.M. yesterday for a serious fire at 12 Bridge st., corner of Third, East Cambridge.

The fire was in a three-story brick building occupied by Baxter & Co. for lumber drying.

The building adjoined the coal yards and pockets of L. G. Burnham & Co.

The fire spread to Burnham's and a second alarm was turned in promptly. The high wind fanned the flames and at 10 a.m. the blaze was still beyond control.

There were some 50,000 ft. of lumber in the section of the yard where the fire started and most of this was damaged.

The old Bay State glass house building, a three-story brick structure, has been occupied by Mr. Baxter for several years as a kiln-drying establishment. Thousands of feet of valuable lumber were being dried, and it was this building that was consumed.

The loss will figure up $25,000, partially covered by insurance.

The old brick building, used as the kiln, was owned by J. P. Squires, and was valued at $8000. Two streams were played on the building from the private fire system connected with the Squires establishment. The building is insured.

The firemen found it necessary to cut many telegraph and telephone wires which passed in front of the building. About 60 wires were cut, including long distance trunk wires and telegraph wires.
