PREFACE
The Proceedings of the American Association for the Advancement of Science were published as annual volumes from the founding of the Association until 1910. Since 1910 the announcements and reports of the meetings, together with the presidential and vice-presidential addresses and other official publications, have appeared in the weekly journal Science, official organ of the Association, which is sent free to all members. The adoption of this plan rendered unnecessary the publication of the full proceedings, and they were replaced by volumes of summarized proceedings (with references to Science) published at intervals of several years. A volume of the Summarized Proceedings, including the Constitution, the Lists of Officers, references to Science for the Presidential and Vice-Presidential Addresses, and the List of Members, was published in 1912, a second in 1915, and a third (somewhat more complete) in 1921. The fourth appeared in the fall of 1925. The present volume is the fifth of the series of Summarized Proceedings. It presents reports for the four-year period from June, 1925, to June, 1929, and corresponds to what would be volumes LXXVIII–LXXXI of the full Proceedings if that series of publications had been continued in the earlier form.
The material presented in this volume is classified in two parts, as follows: Part I, Records and Proceedings, the latter including Summary Reports for the fiscal years: 1924-25 (in part), 1925-26, 1926-27, 1927-28 and 1928-29 (in part). Part II, the Lists of Sustaining Members, Life Members and Emeritus Life Members and the Directory of Fellows and Other Members. The two parts are separately paged.
In the work of preparing and editing the material here presented, the permanent secretary has had the very efficient help of Mr. Sam Woodley, executive assistant in charge of the Washington office, and of Dr. Sam F. Trelease, secretary of the council and program editor. Much of the enormous amount of detailed work involved, including compilations, comparing of lists, etc., has been done by Mrs. Sam Woodley, Miss Lena Dykes, Miss Margaret B. Hicks, Mrs. Helen E. Greenwald, and Mrs. Rowena Weaver. Dr. Trelease has been very ably assisted by Mrs. Helen M. Trelease, especially in the extensive and exacting work of reading and correcting the printer's proofs. It is a great pleasure to acknowledge here the loyal help of all these people, to whose careful service the good features of this volume are mainly due.
BURTON E. LIVINGSTON,
Permanent Secretary.

DIRECTORY OF FELLOWS AND OTHER MEMBERS
OF THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION
FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF SCIENCE
FOR THE PERIOD FROM
JUNE, 1925, TO JUNE, 1929
Two alphabets. — The Directory is in two parts: (a) the main list, including the names of all individual members, and (b) a short section at the end which gives the names of societies, libraries and other institutions holding membership in the Association.
Special designation of fellows and endowment members. — An asterisk before a surname indicates that the member whose name is so marked has been elected to fellowship, being professionally engaged in science or having advanced science by research (see Article II, Section 4, of the By-Laws and Rules of Procedure). Names of sustaining members, life members and emeritus life members (see Article 2 of the Constitution) are printed in large and small capital letters.
Scope. — The Directory includes the names of all who have been members at any time since June, 1925, even if they may have resigned or may have become deceased before the preparation of the present volume.
Sources of data. — Every member was asked to supply the needed information by means of a special information card sent out in February, 1929, and a second card and request were sent out about May 15, to each member who had not responded. Most of the members responded in a fine spirit, but full information was finally lacking in some instances, for which the entries had to be based on information given in the regular Washington files. No members' names are omitted, however. Incompleteness or incorrectness is generally due to failure of the member to respond to requests.
Plan. — Each entry of the main alphabet was planned to include the following items:
1. The surname followed by given name or names or initials, all after the surname being in the natural order and having parentheses around parts usually omitted in correspondence. Thus: Smith, J(ohn) Charles.
2. Higher degrees received from universities, etc., each followed by the name of the institution that conferred the degree and by the last two digits of the number representing the year in which the degree was conferred. Thus: M.Α., Harvard, 19.
3. Official title or position. Thus: Prof. biology.
4. Name and address of the institution or firm with which the member is connected. A question mark in parenthesis following an address denotes that recent mail so addressed has been returned by the Post Office as unclaimed.
5. Special mail address, different from that of institution or firm, this being in parenthesis.
6. The membership record, consisting of one or more of the following items: (1) the year of election to membership (following the letter M), (2) the year in which the member became a life member (following the letter L), (3) the year in which the member became a sustaining member (following the letter S) , (4) the year of election to fellowship (following the letter F) , the year of election to emeritus life membership (following the letter E), and (5) the year of resignation or death (following the letter R or the letter D.
If Association records show that membership has not been continuous, then more than one period of membership is indicated. Thus: M13, F15, R21 denotes membership from 1913, fellowship from 1915, and resignation in 1921, whileM21 , R23, M29, denotes election to membership in 1921, resignation in 1923, and re-election to membership in 1929.
7. Sections of the Association to which the member is allied, shown by their letter designation as set forth in the following list of sections.
A, Mathematics;
B, Physics;
C, Chemistry;
D, Astronomy;
E, Geology and Geography;
F, Zoological Sciences;
G, Botanical Sciences;
H, Anthropology;
I, Psychology;
K, Social and Economic Sciences;
L, Historical and Philological Sciences;
M, Engineering;
N, Medical Sciences;
O, Agriculture;
P, Manufactures and Commerce;
Q. Education.
If a member is recorded as interested in more than a single section the letters indicating sections are arranged in the decreasing order of his interest, as far as that is possible.
