Disque Le Clanche Battery.
The illustration shows the new self-sealing disque Le Clanche battery, recently put upon the market by the Western Electric company of Chicago. The jar has a shoulder projecting inward; on its paraffined surface rests a paraffined ring of wood, through which the porous cup and zinc pass. The zinc has a rubber ring both
above and below the wooden ring, and the porous cup a paraffined shoulder, making it practically self-sealing. Three holes about half an inch in diameter in the bottom of the porous cup, which hangs entirely clear of the bottom, allow the solution to penetrate the ingredients as soon as immersed, and makes the battery quick acting. The battery will give 1½ volts e. m. f. within one minute after being connected up. |
