NEW Apparatus AND Appliances. · · AN INSULATED ARC LAMP HANGER.
The combination of a bell-shaped insulating hanger, similar to those used on over-head trolley lines, with a wooden break-arm makes a remarkably neat and simple insulating support for arc lamps. The accompanying figure illustrates such a hanger made by the Ohio Brass Co., of Mansfield, Ohio. The two metal parts of the hanger are made of malleable iron, insulated from each other by the well known Dirigo insulation which is widely used in the trolley wire appliances made by the same company. The iron parts are so shaped that even should the insulation become shattered, the lamp could not fall unless the castings also were broken. The hook to which the lamp is attached is made deep and narrow to-prevent accidental detachment. The break-arm is of seasoned hard wood, covered with a preservative paint and fitted with porcelain insulators. The hangers are tested at the factory with 6,000 volts alternating current and are built up to support a weight of 2,000 pounds.
