At the residence of Dr. Hamilton, the second meeting of this club took place, last Saturday evening. As upon the previous occasion, the assembly comprised a number of our most intellectual lights, and the proceeding throughout, were of a highly interesting character. Mr. Geo. E. Whitney read the first of a series of original papers, to be continued through the various sessions of the club, upon the general topic of social societies, their benefits and abuses, etc., a sensibly-composed essay, and containing some fine hints. A number of selections, partaking of a humorous character, were read, the most effective, perhaps, being a selection by Miss Emma White, entitled, "Putting up Stoves," illustrating the tribulations attendant upon that species of labor. This young lady reads in a clear, well-modulated voice and is au fait in picturing her author's meaning. A vocal duet by Mesdames Tuttle and Hamilton, was sweetly rendered, and "Auld Lang Syne," with variations by Miss Virgie Tiernan, was charmingly executed. Judge Hemingray, with his "Darius Green and His Flying Machine," created much merriment, and sent everybody home in good spirits. Mrs. Hamilton, as hostess, was untiring in her efforts to entertain, and contributed largely to the success of the meeting. Next Saturday evening, at the residence of Mr. Whitney, the club will again meet, when the life and works of Lord Byron will be discussed.
