WILLIAM BROOKFIELD DEAD.

New York Politician, Interested in Jersey, Has Passed Away.

New York, May 14. -William Brookfield, former Commissioner of Public Works under Mayor Strong, and for four years chairman of the Republican State Committee, died yesterday morning at his house, 516 Madison Ave., of heart disease.

He was born in Red Bank, N.J., May 24, 1844. He was the proprietor of the Bushwick Glass Works, president of the Sheldon Axel Company of Wilkesbarre, and of the Franklin Loan and Improvement Company of New Jersey. He was also President of St. Johns Guild and a trustee of Wells College at Aurora.

Mr. Brookfield was the anti-Platt candidate for the presidency of the Republican County Committee in 1895, but was defeated by Edward Lauterbach.

He was vice president of the Union League Club, and a member of many prominent clubs in this city. He leaves a widow and five sons.
