The indictment last week of Joseph and Isaac Wormser, of the Wormser Glass Co., Frankstown, this city, is the first under the new law of this State regulating the labor of children, and the outcome of the case is looked forward to with great interest, especially by glass manufacturers. It is easy for parents to "work in" boys under twelve years of age, whose employment the law prohibits, in the management of the factories, and a plea on the part of the owners that they had been deceived would be no justification. The Wormser Co. say they intend to raise the question as to whether the law, which was passed in May, 1889, and has so far been a dead letter, is constitutional or not, and in case of a decision adverse to them now will appeal to the Supreme Court. There is one thing certain, and that is that a glass factory cannot be run without boys. |
