Owens-Illinois Celebrates

60 Years of Progress.

OWENS-ILLINOIS GLASS CO., this year marking its 60th anniversary, is celebrating, quite properly, at the Century of Progress. Thousands daily are visiting the unique Owens-Illinois building of colored glass blocks, located in the housing group toward the south end of the exposition grounds. This unique structure is itself a "glass container." It has no windows; incorporates many unusual engineering features, and, at night, is a delight to the eyes, as it glows with light streaming through its colored walls.

Inside is a model of a miniature glass container factory, in operation. This is largely the work of T. K. Almroth, advertising manager, who even discovered a latent talent for carving when he assayed the task of making life-like little figures of workers tending the machines. In connection with this exhibit is a display of interesting containers from Owens-Illinois factories, and, last but not least, a complete, full-size coffee packing line, featuring Owens-Illinois machinery for vacuum packing coffee in glass.

This feature of the exhibit, like the others, has proved itself a great attention-getter. At almost every minute that the fair is open there is a crowd around to watch the vacuumizer at work. This exhibit is highly educational and at the same time is excellent publicity for those companies now packaging coffee in glass, since it offers conclusive evidence of the high vacuum obtainable in glass. And vacuum — as most people know, is just about indispensable where coffee freshness is to be retained.
