Glass Strike

Toledo, O. (AP) — A federal mediator will meet Monday with union and company representatives in an effort to settle the first industry-wide strike against pressed and blown glass manufacturers.

The strike by 7,000 AFL Flint Glass Workers started Saturday while their leaders were negotiating here on a new contract. Eleven plants in six states were affected.

The National Association of Manufacturers of Pressed and Blown Glassware is bargaining for the employers. Talks began July 28 in Atlantic City and Contracts expired Sept. 1.

When negotiations recessed Saturday night, a manufacturers' spokesman said the union had turned down a package offer which would have cost an average between 14 and 15 cents an hour in wages and other benefits. The union first had asked wage hikes of 20 per cent or 20 cents an hour, whichever was higher.

The struck plants include Kimble Glass Co., Muncie, Ind., an Owens-Illinois subsidiary, and Overmyer Mould Co., Winchester, Ind.
