Glass Container Pact

Approved in Toledo

A settlement was reached in negotiations for the container glass industry division for American Flint Glass Workers (AFL) Tuesday afternoon, according to word received here from Toledo where industry-wide negotiations were taking place. The settlement forestalled any strike or shutdown in container industries, including Ball Brothers Company of Muncie.

However, negotiations were resumed today for another division of AFGW, largely composed of machine operators and miscellaneous workers in the pressed or flat glassware field. Failure to effect a settlement before a deadline last Friday resulted in a strike which affected nearly 7,000 workers nationally. Locally, the strike forced shutdown of the Kimble Glass Company.

WORD OF THE settlement for container glass workers was received by company officials at Ball Bothers, and Tom Bright, president of Local 50, AFGW, a mouldmakers union. Bright said that while full details of the settlement were not known, he understood that the agreement included a five per cent wage increase, with fringe benefits including: A 5-cent night differential, three weeks paid vacation after 15 years service, a paid two-day "death" layoff, and an increase in the amount per man hour contributed by the company for sickness and health benefits.

The agreement reached for container industry workers covered about 1,800 moldmakers, none of whom struck when the contract expired Sept. 1.
